Provide access while maintaining the integrity of your network

Today, employees can, and often must, work from just about anywhere. But to do this, they need remote access to their office's network. This need for network access isn't limited to just your employees. Visitors to your office might also need network access on their notebooks, whether wirelessly or through a direct connection to your local-area network (LAN). But any time a connection to your network is attempted or activated, there is risk involved. Without the proper safeguards in place, you risk personal data and identity theft, network abuse, denial-of-service (DoS) issues and other threats.

Today's security protocols require that you implement security at the point of connection to your network to fully identify and authenticate each user on your network. You can do this through implementation of a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) virtual private network (VPN) solution.

SSL VPN solutions provide secure remote access
SSL VPN solutions provide users and businesses with a flexible and secure way to extend networking resources to virtually any remote user with access to the Internet and a Web browser. Remote access based on an SSL VPN delivers secure access to network resources by establishing an encrypted tunnel across the Internet using a broadband (cable, DSL) or ISP dial-up connection.

SSL VPN solutions allow you to cost-effectively and securely extend the reach of your network to:
  • Telecommuters
  • Contractors
  • Mobile workers
  • Business partners
Secure your network connections
By providing endpoint control and granular access policies, SSL VPNs can enhance the overall security of enterprise resources. Firewall, antivirus and antispyware software will help protect against threats, but it is also necessary to secure all transmissions between notebooks and your company's networks, servers and users' desktops. SSL VPNs can detect what is running on the endpoint device, protect applications with access controls based on user identity and device integrity, and connect users securely to applications on any device.

What to look for in an SSL VPN solution
There are a number of SSL VPN products on the market, each varying in capability and cost. Access to Web resources through standard Web browsers is a fundamental requirement of an SSL VPN solution. However, it is quite common to allow different levels of access to employees depending on their roles and responsibilities.

Evaluate how much information you want to share over a remote connection. You may want to provide all employees with access to client/server applications like Microsoft® Outlook while giving a smaller group of employees additional access to mission-critical applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM). Because of this need to custom tailor levels of access, your SSL VPN solution should offer customizable access.

Policies for network protection

• Before purchase, learn how vendors test their products for security

• Review software security features

• Monitor vulnerability

• Install the latest patches

• Scan all PCs in the network for compliance

• Do not use one server for multiple purposes

• Deploy intruder-detection systems

• Use one-time passwords

• Segregate departmental applications

• Install firewalls inside the network and on the perimeter

• Use open standards such as Security Assertion Markup Language when developing software architecture
