What is business mobility?

When a small business is utilizing mobility technology, it basically means it's able to communicate with its employees, suppliers, partners or customers regardless of location. Additionally, the same type of technology can also allow these companies to manage and control assets, products and inventory — no matter where it is or where employees may be.
Capabilities and benefits

It is probably an understatement to say mobility is catching on in the business world. On average, mobility accounts for nearly 1/3 of the telecom budgets of American businesses. It began with mobile e-mail for business owners, but as availability and affordability have increased, the capability has extended to workers on all levels. With more employees able to work in more places, businesses have gained flexibility, which has led to increased productivity. When employees can work away from the office or keep connected while in the field, business can continue to operate in situations where they wouldn't have been able to previously. Also, when employees, especially key decision makers, are within quick reach, business processes don't come to a screeching halt when they're away from their desks.
How much does mobility help?

There's a lot of data and case studies that document the gains companies have experienced. According to a study by research firm Ipsos Reid, an employee with the right device can save as many as 188 working hours per year. Translated into 8-hour workdays, that's 23.5 extra days per year, per employee.
Return on investment (ROI)

Many organizations have attributed significant ROI due to the deployment of mobile e-mail alone. Once they start incorporating other aspects of business mobility, like moving inventory management and sales force automation over to handhelds, the returns become even greater.
Data security

There has never been a more critical time for companies to get tighter control over their mobile devices. More and more sensitive information is being passed through or stored on mobile devices. Due to their nature, they're more likely to be lost, stolen or hacked into. So it's especially important to know exactly who is using what device and what information is being passed through your network on them.
