Malls, restaurants, banks, hotels -- these are just a few places you'll see digital signage. These signs are often used for advertising in-store promotions, important information or entertainment programming. And with more and more businesses jumping on, digital signage is evolving, with multimedia signs becoming more popular. Getting started Digital signage isn't just a pretty screen; this solution requires some strategic planning before you make a purchase. The simplest system would typically include the following components: * Display: commercial-grade plasma or LCD; these type of displays are built for long-term operation, such as being on 24 hours every day, with the ventilation, cooling fans and heat sensors to keep it running * Mounting system: ceiling or wall mount * PC: allows for central control of the system over the network * Content management software (CMS): offers content creation and management, critical parts to an effective digital signage network * Surge suppressor: an appliance designed to regulate voltage to protect electrical devices from destructive power spikes Compelling communication Customized content, and the frequency of which it can be updated, is one compelling benefit of digital signage. Business owners can change out the messaging to be more specific to a particular audience based on age group, time of day or any other criteria they may have. "For example, the message could be focused on retirees during the earlier part of the day, parents later in the day and singles late in the day," says Mike Zmuda, director of business development at digital signage provider NEC Display Solutions of America, Itasca, Ill. "No other medium can provide this type of focus for the out-of-home audience." Not just the messaging, but how the messaging is displayed can be easily adapted per audience, whether it's including an animation, is video based or includes closed captioning. Businesses can make a maximum use of these multimedia capabilities. The speed with which this information can be dispersed is another benefit. This time savings reduces the amount of work staffers would spend updating traditional signage. Content is king It's critical for businesses to understand what it is they wish to accomplish before purchasing a digital signage system. The type of content you wish to display, as well as how often it will change and who will be responsible for controlling the content, will dictate the type of system you purchase. "The number one thing to consider is your ability to develop a pipeline of content," says Jeffrey Blankensop, director of business development at NEC. "It's not a one-stop type of activity. In time, your content will become stale and you have to plan for updating the content. And that could be a complete revamp or only moderate changes." For example, if you're going to take advantage of high-definition video, you need to make sure your PC is powerful enough to handle it, Blankensop notes. In this case, a high-performance graphics card with plenty of on-board RAM is a must. But if you plan to display static imagery, such as text and photos, then you won't need a high-performance PC to act as the media engine. You also need to consider whether the system will run over a network. And if so, will it be a local-area (LAN) or wide-area network (WAN)? In either case, centralized control is the key factor. You'll need to have one control point for all the displays and individual controls for all the displays. %%d_amdefault_cta%% Forward this e-mail http://raf.cdw-email.com/r/raf?n=100&t=%%t%%&u=%%RAF_TRACK%%&remail=%%email%% CDW Leasing CDW offers four different leasing terms with three end-of-lease options.
