Protect yourself from barbarians at the gateway
Gateway security breaches are evolving into more covert, deviant and widely damaging attacks, according to John Kindervag, senior analyst at Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. The known threats, such as denial-of-service attacks, zombies, eavesdropping, worms, war driving and blended attacks, are constantly evolving into more potent strains.

Industry-watchers agree: now is not the time to skimp on gateway security. In fact, it costs less to prevent a security breach at the gateway than to recover from a data compromise after it happens.
Gateway security in tough times
The gateway is any entrance point to a network. This includes wireless gateways, wide area network (WAN)-type gateways, frame relay or point of sale, gateways on the Internet and gateways to business partners — each of which can be made up of multiple technologies.

"You could have, for example, in a traditional corporate network, a gateway firewall," Kindervag says. And you might also have multiple gateway intrusion prevention system (IPS) devices protecting the traffic moving in and out of that firewall.

"You need to make sure you have proactive technologies that are in line and stop bad stuff on the wire, so you don't have to worry about them," he adds. "By the time they get into your network, it's too late."
The gateway
No matter where you turn, companies are looking to cut costs, and every level of the business is affected. Industry-watchers say the latest gateway security solutions are more streamlined, powerful and cost effective than ever. And with more tasks being put online to save money, they are even more critical. The good news: companies with gateway security solutions and appliances may already have the tools they need to make these transitions.

And with the threat environment constantly changing, all gateway and network security devices should be reviewed for reliability and accuracy every two to three years, Kindervag says.

That doesn't always mean software and appliances should be replaced, just that new protections might need to be added. Regardless, make sure the security solutions continue to meet your business's growing demands.
Money-saving solutions
Vendors have been working on integrating several layers of security into one appliance as networks become increasingly complex and expected to do more. These Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions are an emerging trend in the appliance security market, designed to simplify management and reduce the overall cost of gateway security while offering perimeter protection.

Other products to look for integrate layered security into one box, putting antivirus, antispyware and intrusion detection all at the gateway. Solutions without this integration of protection may force you to buy two or four boxes, which can become very expensive.

You want to make smart investments with your precious IT dollars, but don't put it off. The next time you're considering pulling the plug on a gateway security project, Kindervag reminds you to think twice. "Think of yourself as living in the worst crime-ridden neighborhood in the world," he says. "That's what the Internet is. Beyond general business processes — security should be your number one concern."
