Apple products are making themselves at home in more offices
For years, the PowerPC processors used in Apple computers delivered the high-performance computing needed for many graphics-intensive applications. But in April 2006, Apple made big news when it announced the move from PowerPC chips to Intel® Processors. Now Apple computers are available with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo and Quad Xeon® processors, the same processors found in many top-end PCs. And these processors are available throughout the Apple line. Apple's desktop line consists of the iMac®, Mac® mini and Mac Pro. Notebooks include MacBook™ and MacBook Pro.
Mac OS® X continues to lead in simplicity
Mac OS® X is a big reason why people purchase an Apple computer. Essentially, Apple has taken a UNIX-based operating system (OS) and added its well-known graphical-user interface. The result is a powerful OS that's easy to use.
The current OS, named Tiger™, includes support for 64-bit applications and Spotlight™, a built-in advanced search function. Additionally, Tiger includes Xgrid® 1.0, a software package that allows you to quickly create a distributed cluster of up to 128 systems running up to 10,000 queued jobs.
Tiger has more than 200 new features. Many were designed to simplify access to and management of data. Spotlight helps you find a file, document or piece of information that was created by any application on a Mac. Using Spotlight, you can find an e-mail, image file, any Microsoft® Office file or a calendar appointment.
Not only are Apple products easy to use, they're also easy to connect to other equipment. Every Apple computer comes with high-performance connectivity for easy transfer of large multimedia files. Using what Apple calls the "high-speed" mode, Macs with USB 2.0 ports can transfer data at speeds up to 480Mbps. Additionally, Apple hardware includes FireWire® connectivity for transfer rates up to 800Mbps.
Apple's Xserve® servers find homes in more businesses
While Apple's notebooks and desktops are known for their features, performance and ease of use, many businesses are discovering the same characteristics in the Xserve® server line.
The Xserve packs power and industry-leading capabilities into a high-density, 1U rack-mount server that fits easily into any network environment. And this UNIX-based server now packs quad-core 64-bit Intel® Xeon® processing. Additional features include up to 2.25TB storage, two eight-lane PCI Express slots, dual onboard Gigabit Ethernet and a combo drive. With all this, the Xserve provides the stability you need and performance to spare. With Intel's power-per-watt-optimized Xeon processor, Xserve maximizes your server performance while minimizing power and cooling requirements.
You can run Windows® on your Apple
Though most Apple computer users love Mac OS X, there are times when a user might need to run an application that is not available for a Mac. To assure its users weren't left out, Apple released Boot Camp, a free software package that allows you to run Windows® XP on any Intel-based Apple. In essence, this software allows you to partition your Apple's hard drive for Windows. It then helps you burn a CD with all required drivers to run Windows, then installs Windows from a Windows XP installation CD. After installation, you're ready to run either Mac OS X or Windows XP.
